Thumb Pain

Thumb pain is a common complaint that can affect hand function and everyday activities. The thumb plays a central role in grip strength, and problems in this area can therefore have a major impact on quality of life. The pain can be due to various causes, from overuse to degenerative changes in the joint.

Symptoms of thumb pain

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain when moving or putting pressure on the thumb
  • Swelling or tenderness at the base of the thumb
  • Stiffness or decreased mobility in the thumb
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Feeling of instability or weakness in the thumb

Causes

Thumb pain can have several causes. One common cause is thumb osteoarthritis, a form of osteoarthritis that affects the joint at the base of the thumb and leads to pain and stiffness. Another cause may be De Quervain's syndrome, a tendonitis that causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist. Ligament injuries, often caused by trauma, can also lead to pain and instability. In addition, overuse of the thumb, such as frequent use of smartphones, can lead to overuse injuries, sometimes called "texting thumb."

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually made through a clinical examination where the doctor assesses the symptoms and mobility of the thumb. In some cases, imaging tests, such as X-rays or ultrasound, may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. An accurate diagnosis is important in order to choose the right treatment method.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the pain. For thumb osteoarthritis, relief with thumb supports, painkillers and physiotherapy can be effective. For De Quervain's syndrome, rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and sometimes cortisone injections are often recommended. Ligament injuries may require immobilization with an orthosis and, in some cases, surgery. For overuse injuries, it is important to identify and reduce the stressing activities and to use supports to relieve the thumb.

Prevention

To prevent it, it is important to avoid overload by varying working positions and taking regular breaks during repetitive activities. Using ergonomic aids and correct technique during physical activity can reduce the risk of injury. Strength and mobility training for the hand and thumb can also help prevent problems.
